A Heart Shaped Girl

The silphium died out a dozen centuries ago. Historians cast doubt on what it was, but what is known is that the desert overtook the land – the only place it’d grow – and the last stalk was dried out, then presented to Nero as an idle curiosity – how strange to be extinct! How humbling to hold something that disappears a blink later, straight erased from every archive on the earth. You are worth more to me than silphium – the last stalk or the first that tumbled out of wild grassland – I adore you with a passion that is seldom found in nature – unlike our almighty maker I could never let you drown in someone’s secondhand account of some plant some peasant found – I am yours now til our own small disappearance.
