Devil and a Speyside

Did I not warn you, the Devil began (ten thousand dollars of Scotch in his hand, in one little rocks glass. He motions to pass, and then thinks much better of it), you’d end up alone with nobody who needs you? Did I not warn you, he says (you can see through the act but he does make a point. He hands you the Scotch, and the world is disjointed and flimsy a second. And then he beckons you try it – you do and you like it), the banks would collapse, the winds would pick up, the tapering laugh when you’re coming back to the room would obviously be about you? Is that not warning enough? He pauses a moment to let this sink in. He studies the lancing (or lacing?) of film from his drink at the top of his glass in the light. Takes a casual sip. Closes his eyes and then opens them, hands me his card, saying Have you been praying to anyone lately?
